Celiac disease and gluten sensitivity will be addressed on SoCal NOW, Southern California’s premiere lifestyle television show, featuring the hottest spots all around. The segment will be aired on Thursday, April 30th, 6:30am, on KCAL 9. They’re doing a little segment with The Sensitive Baker (that’s us!)

(Yes, I know 6:30am is a little early for TV; that’s what DVR’s are for. ;-) )

They taped this weeks ago and I thought it was going to be aired the week before Mother’s Day, after the CDF conference this weekend. Otherwise I would have put in a plug so people would attend. [That's my next post, BTW.] Sorry, wonderful people at the CDF; I didn’t know!

[Edited to say: Not that the CDF needs me to plug them - the conference is probably packed already!]

For more information go to SoCal NOW.

what you need to know about tummy aches

image of woman in visible abdominal distressDr. C. Richard Boland, chief of gastroenterology at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, says that persistent stomach aches, nausea, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, or heartburn should be discussed with your doctor, according to an article called “What You Need to Know When Your Stomach Aches” in US News and World Report.

Just remember doctors aren’t God. (Though they sometimes think they are!) I will always remember bringing my [unknown to us] super-gluten-sensitive son into his doctor, who talked to him for a couple of minutes and pronounced, “Kids get stomach aches. It’s normal.” I ignored my son’s symptoms for years because “it’s normal!”

It is NOT normal to have a lot of stomach aches, even for a kid. It’s NOT normal to often get diarrhea! And no-one knows your body like you.

!
#1 Blueberry Struesel. These muffins are miraculous; tender, fluffy, packed with berries, and they even keep a few days on the counter - maybe even better than the chocolate zucchini, which was always our best-keeping muffin.

#2 Carrot Muffin with eggs and walnuts that’s moist and fragrant for days. We’ll still keep the old vegan-morning-glorys around (they’re free of all eight of the eight major allergens) but even frozen, the eggy carrot muffins are selling like hotcakes!

Non-vegans can now get a Mixed Muffin Set; two each of Chocolate-Zucchini, Blueberry-Struesel, and Carrot, normally $10, but we’ve been running everything 10% off leading up to Passover, so for now, for you :-), it’s only $9. (Soy free.)

GF-Oat Matza for Passover
**
The Sensitive Baker will be closed for Passover [watch for our annual spring-sale!] but I’m ordering Gluten-Free Oat Matza for my own personal use, and wanted to know if anyone else wants in on the “DEAL.”

These are the same GF-Oat Matzo that Gluten-Free Bay blogged about last week.

They come 3 (only 3) round, handmade, slightly burned matzos to a box, for only $24 (Compare to $23 PLUS SHIPPING if ordered direct from the Lakewood Matzo Factory; and almost certainly approaching $30/box, if not more, if ordered from Western Kosher Market (on Fairfax, (323) 655-8870).)

BUT we can only honor this price if you order by Midnight (Pacific Time) Monday March 23. You’ll PAY NOTHING until your order ships, and if you’re a Southern California resident and subscribe to our “Sensitive Information” newsletter you’ll get FREE SHIPPING! (Out-of area members take $6 off postage.)

Just our way to say “thank you!” And, “Happy Holidays!”

So send an email to sandee { at } thesensitivebaker(.)com to reserve your order NOW! I’m calling the order in Tuesday morning, and I’m not getting any extra — that stuff is way too expensive to have lying around!

The best thing If I had to pick the best thing A&E gave us; the one thing that translated into more business than any other? I’d have to say the sign. The big, attractive sign at eye level as people drive past on Washington Blvd. (a block west of Overland, a half-mile east of the 405.) That sign brought more people into the store than anything else (even the show itself!) Read the rest of this entry »

set your TIVO!

[If you subscribe to that sort of thing of course, :-)]

We’re on A&E probably for the last time this Saturday morning, March 21st, at 7:00 a.m. The show is called We Mean Business. As embarrassing as it is, we’d love for you to watch!

Just remember, the We Mean Business people had their own agenda. Like, those boys, Dylan and Cliff? They were INTERNS, in culinary school, and they were leaving to study for their finals! You’d have thought they were sneaking off to do drugs, or something.

And David Katz? [David left, BTW, to join the Israeli army.] What were they thinking when they asked David to come in at SEVEN A.M.? David was a late-shift man. He CLOSED the place. Mornings were not his thing.

[We Mean Business did great, GREAT things for us. I don't mean to kvetch. It's just, my boys deserved better.]

None of those kids are with us any more, anyway. :-(
Now we have Grissel :-) and life is good.

First, let me preface with my favorite video snippet, because we need some perspective, here.

Last week, Tuesday (I remember it exactly because it was Purim day), my laptop got a bad virus.

Now you gotta understand, this is my “baby,” this is the Dell Latitude D630 they gave me on the We Mean Business show last summer. Read the rest of this entry »
